GMS SERVICE CLUB
Thinking of Others
The GMS Service Club is organizing two special programs to inspire students to think beyond their own wants and needs to those of others in our community. Please support their efforts by donating to their Canned Food Drive. The drive is officially underway and continues on through Friday, November 16. The goal is to achieve 100% student participation and collect 10,000 cans before students leave for Thanksgiving break.
The Service Club is also making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the veterans who are in the hospital. They will need help decorating brown lunch bags, writing kind notes, packaging pretzels, distributing juice boxes, and including the generous Halloween candy donations that were sent in. Service Club members will also be organizing boxes, homeroom lists, and homework passes for all the students who think of others by bringing in non-perishable goods to the canned food drive.
The GMS Service Club made the news! View the Grayslake Review 10/4/07.
We are excited to offer a new opportunity for students to get involved in school! GMS Service Club met Wednesday for the first time. The goal of Service Club is "to create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people by providing voluntary services through school and community involvement." We will be doing service hours and completing service projects for both the school and community in an attempt to integrate the teaching of positive character across the curricula, expose students to diverse career possibilities, and provide opportunities for service learning.
GMS Service Club will meet every Wednesday from 3:30-4:30. The character theme we will focus on each month and align our projects to will coincide with our new Advisory program, WiseSkills. While we would like to see all students participate each week, we encourage everyone to come to all the meetings they can make, as attendance each week is not mandatory.
The first project GMS Service Club has initiated is called "Pass the Paw". Pass the Paw, similar to the Pay-It-Forward movement, will hopefully spread a positive attitude around GMS quickly. Students and teachers have been asked to do something kind that is very specific and out-of-the-blue in order to make someone else's day. We want students to realize that their good deeds are contagious and a population of good-doers will create a positive environment around GMS.
Please encourage your son or daughter to come out and give GMS Service Club a try.
