Food Allergy Awareness Week 2010
May 9-15 is Food Allergy Awareness Week. Did you know that over 12 million Americans have food allergies; more than 3 million of them are children (that's almost 1 out of every 25 kids). The most common foods that cause allergies are peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, wheat, and soy.
Presently, there is no cure for food allergies. The only thing we can do to protect ourselves or someone else with food allergies is to AVOID the foods that cause the allergy! That is why we have so many classrooms that are "Peanut Free" and why we have peanut free tables in the school cafeterias.
If you would like more information on Food Allergies, check out www.faankids.org/.

Parent Teacher Conferences - October 5-9, 2009
Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for the week of October 5th. Students will be dismissed at 11:45 on Thursday,
October 8th and there will be no school on Friday, October 9th.
We would like to thank you for taking the time to complete and return the parent information exchange forms that were sent home in September. Communication between parent and teacher is a high priority. The parent exchange form is one way to facilitate two-way communication between home and school. The information you provided will be used by your child's teacher on September 25 to help her/him prepare for your child's year of learning and your parent teacher conference.
Our hope for fall conferences is to begin the year by setting attainable goals for your child's learning. The purpose of the first
conference is to give parents and teachers time to set goals and develop strategies and approaches that meet the needs of each child's unique learning style.
Goal setting is important. When kids are successful at setting and reaching goals, they feel good about themselves. Parents and teachers can work together to help the child set specific attainable goals. For instance, "be smart" is too broad. "Learn my addition facts," however can be observed and measured.
Making the Most of Parent/Teacher Conferences
- Plan ahead for the conference. Ask your child if there is anything he/she would like you to bring up during the meeting. If you
have a lot of questions you might want to jot them down on a piece of paper. You could also send questions to the teacher
ahead of time, so that the teacher is prepared and your conference time is used efficiently.
- Please come at your scheduled time. If the teacher is engaged in a conference at your scheduled time, please knock on the door to let the teacher know you are there. This will allow all of the conferences to stay on schedule.
- Think of yourself as a partner with the teacher. You can work with the teacher in coming up with ideas and goals to help your child achieve success in school. Help your child to establish their own goals, and ask them how you can support those goals at home.
- Finally, share the details of the conference with your child. Let them know that everyone has strengths and areas in which to grow.
If you have not signed up for a conference or if you need to change your time, please call the Frederick School office at 543-5300 to schedule or reschedule a conference time.
