UPDATE 5/21/09:
CCSD 46 has had three students with confirmed cases of flu type A, which is not the H1N1 virus yet, but along the same line of flu type A. We are working very closely with the Lake County Department of Health. The recommendations are that any student or staff member with flu-like illness should stay home for seven days after the onset of symptoms, try to avoid close contact with people who have symptoms, and make sure you wash your hands often, especially before eating.
Please be aware of these recommendations from the Lake County Department of Health.
Ellen Correll, Superintendent

Human cases of H1N1 Influenza A virus infection have been identified in the United States, including the Chicagoland area. CCSD 46 is providing links to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Illinois Deptartment of Health, and Lake County Department of Health in order to inform staff and parents of the symptoms of the H1N1 flu as well as suggestions on staying healthy.
The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center has activated an H1N1 Flu Hotline for county residents to obtain more information on H1N1 flu, including the signs and symptoms and how to remain healthy. Their H1N1 Flu Hotline number is 847-377-8350. Information is provided in both English and Spanish.
What you can do to stay healthy:
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after use.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Avoid close contact with sick people.
Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
If you get sick, you should stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Symptoms of H1N1 flu:
- Fever
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Body aches
- Headache
- Chills
- Fatigue
Some people have also reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with the H1N1 flu.
People with H1N1 flu symptoms who have traveled to regions where the H1N1 flu has been confirmed should seek medical attention.
More information of the H1N1 Influenza A virus can be found on the Centers for Disease Control website.
